PG's Behind The Music: Ulala

Dancing aliens? Angry techno artists? Feminine hygiene commercials? Michael Jackson in space?

This is the story of the long, strange trip of Ulala, the heroine of Sega's Space Channel 5 series. For a short time, she was one of gaming's most recognizable stars, but fame was fleeting for the Dreamcast icon. Today we look back at Ulala's 15 minutes of fame and find out how one of the brightest stars in the Sega universe burned out so quickly.

In the year 2499, the Earth was under attack by a hostile alien species called the Morolians. The Morolians had squandered all of their natural resources and had to turn to the power of choreographed dancing to create energy. Having intercepted satellite transmissions of old broadcasts of Saturday Night Fever and Japanese Legend of Zelda commercials, the Morolians chose to invade Earth to exploit their plentiful dancing power. Despite over 500 years of space-age technological advancements, Earthlings were powerless to stop the invasion. The Morolians zapped helpless people with their unstoppable Dance Rays, which caused uncontrollable funkiness in their victims.

The first news crew on the scene of the unfolding disaster were the intrepid reporters of Space Channel 5 (In the future, all TV networks were identified by generic Space Channel Numbers, much like the BBC). Space Channel 5 was one of the least watched networks on television, placing somewhere between CSPAN-6 and the Space Home Shopping Network. Space Channel 5 News was the least watched TV program in the galaxy, even getting lower ratings than reruns of "Let Us Trim Our Hair In Accordance With The Socialist Lifestyle".

Despite their previous struggles, they knew that by arriving at the scene of the invasion first, they had a chance to turn around their floundering news program by doing a good job covering this huge story. Unfortunately, shortly after arriving at the invasion site, their entire news team was zapped by the aliens and turned into mindless dancing fools. Faced with the impending doom of his program, the news director of Space Channel 5, sent out the only person left on his payroll to cover the invasion, Ulala.

Before the Morolian invasion, Ulala was a rookie reporter at Space Channel 5. She was usually stuck doing boring human interest stories involving cute cats stuck in trees or local city council meetings. With the loss of the rest of the reporting staff, she was thrust into a role of star reporter during the Morolian invasion. When she arrived at the scene of the attack, she was immediately targeted by the Morolians and their evil dancing beams. However, unknown to the aliens, she was an extremely talented dancer herself. When the aliens tried to zap her with their ray guns, she used her dancing skills to dodge their attacks and blast them into oblivion.

Ulala grooves and zaps the invading alien forces off of the planet and chased them to their mothership where she found out that they were really under the control of Space Channel 5's Owner, Mr. Blank. The entire invasion was nothing but a setup intended to boost Space Channel 5's ratings. Ulala destroyed the alien mothership and returned to Earth to confront Mr. Blank. When she reached the Space Channel 5 HQ, she snuck into the owner's room where she found a shocking discovery.

Space Michael!

That's right, hidden in Mr. Blank's office was none other than Michael Jackson. Space Michael, as he was called in the future, had tried to fight off the aliens on his own but was captured by Mr. Blank before he could unravel the businessman's evil plans. Ulala released Space Michael and together they were able to destroy Mr. Blank and bring peace back to the world.

Thanks to her heroic efforts, Ulala quickly became television's biggest star. Space Michael became the new owner of Space Channel 5 and made it the highest rated network on television. Together, the duo continued to use their unique dancing gifts to save the galaxy from evil, including a plot to kidnap the president and use the Morolians dancing rays to enslave all mankind. Ulala reached the peak of her fame when she produced a series of well known feminine hygiene commercials....

With this kind of star power, it seemed like Ulala's fame would last forever. Unknown to anyone, Ulala's time at the top was about to end. Shortly after the end of her second adventure with Space Michael, the TV star was sued by an obscure Techno artist named Lady Miss Kier. Kier claimed that Ulala's TV character was simply a ripoff of her musical persona. The other Space News networks, jealous of Ulala's popularity, jumped all over the accusations and made them the top news story on TV. Despite the weak case that Kier had brought against Ulala, the rest of the media treated the charges against her as indisputable facts and worked hard to turn public opinion against her.

Faced with a public outcry against his star, Space Michael appealed to the public to allow the courts to rule on Ulala's case before presuming her guilty. However, the rest of the media had already branded her a criminal, and Space Michael, faced with the collapse of his network, was forced to fire Ulala. Eventually, Lady Miss Kier's case against Ulala was dismissed and she was forced to pay Ulala's legal fees. But it was too late for Ulala as her competitors had successfully damaged her reputation to the point where she was unable to mount a comeback.

Although Ulala may be gone forever, you can still relive her adventures on the Sega Dreamcast with Space Channel 5 and on the Playstation 2 with Space Channel 5: Special Edition. Along with being fun rhythm games, they also fill gaming's distressing lack of Michael Jackson that has existed since Moonwalker and Ready To Rumble Boxing Part 2.
