Biomiracle Bokutte Upa: Hottest Famicom BGM Bombtrack Ever?

Is there a better famicom (or NES) BGM track out there than Biomiracle Boku tte Upa? (Translation: Biomiracle My Name is Upa) When we got a copy of the uber rare Famicom cartridge version of Biomiracle Bokutte Upa in last week, we were reminded of just how catchy that Upa jingle is. If this song doesn’t make you wanna inflate some little pigs and ride them like skateboards, nothing will. (Nothing that you can find at PG…) Jump to the break for hot pig inflating action music.

If you’ve never played Biomiracle, you’re probably not alone since it was never released stateside. Basically, you control Upa, a supercharged baby with a license to shake, RATTLE and roll. Our hero, the ever-diminutive inflater of pigs, can merely crawl but he sure wields a big stick. When you smack the enemies with the rattle, they inflate like balloons and you can jump on and hitch a ride or hurl them to take out other enemies. (In this sense the game definitely bears strong similarities to Hoshi no Kirby and SMB3 -although a bit easier). When Upa grabs a power up, he turns biped. Lookout pigs! Hell hath no fury like a Biped Upa's scorn.

In total there are seven worlds in which you and Upa journey across. The first is Sweet World. The last is called Miracle Castle. And in between there's... 5 more. During your journey through the land of Upa, you snag various power ups and health as you battle nefarious foes like the Moguccho, mindless cake eating moles or Tonton, the little puffable piggies. And lets not forget the annoying Bamupenshi, flying pencils that throw little balls at Upa. The final boss fight is against the king of beasts, the venerable Sai who flies through the air and drops his minions on poor little Upa as he scrambles for cover.

Biomiracle Boku tte Upa is a PG approved Famicom action platformer and like most Konami titles (from the Famicom days) highly recommended for the retro gaming fan looking to experience games not released stateside. And the soundtrack is definitely the bomb.

If you’re a Pop’n Music fan you might have already heard the cute Biomiracle jingle jangle in Pop’n Music Part 9. Volume up please!

Upa Collectability:
The cart version of Upa was released at the tail end of the Famicom generation in 1993. Due to the late limited run, the cartridge is extremely rare. Biomiracle has the distinguished honor of being one of just a handful of Famicom games released as both a disk for the disk system (1988) and as a cartridge (1993). The disk system version is much easier to come by.

Upa Bonus Footage:(Caution, ending ahead!)
Biomiracle Bokutte Upa was featured on the hit Japanese TV retro gaming show GamecenterCX. You can watch the show in its entirety by clicking on this link or watch the ending below.

Upa Japanese:
Hai means ‘yes’ in Japanese. And haihai means 'to crawl'.
So what does Upaha haihai shika dekinaikedo, garagara wo tukatte teki wo tataku mean? 'Upa can only crawl but he uses his rattle to smack enemies'. Very good!
