N64, Gamecube and Xbox fans certainly recall the days of seemingly endless announcements of highly anticipated games becoming Sony exclusives. The shoe seems to be on the other foot these days. First, Dragon Quest IX, Japan's most popular franchise, became a NDS exclusive with no plans for a PS3 version in the works. Then games like Devil May Cry 4, originally announced to be PS3 exclusive, will see a Xbox 360 release. Now, in what has to be one of the most shocking announcements in Japan.....
....Capcom has made Monster Hunter 3 a Wii exclusive. Yesterday, there were reports that at least of version of Monster Hunter 3 would be coming to the Nintendo Wii, but the fate of the previously announced Monster Hunter 3 for the PS3 was uncertain. Today, Famitsu has confirmed that the PS3 version of the game has been canceled and all the development on the game has been shifted over to the Wii.
This is not good news for Sony. Why? Although not nearly as popular in the United States, the Monster Hunter series was one of the primary reasons for the PSP's success in Japan. You talk to Japanese retailers about the lagging sales of the PS3, and most are optomistic that Sony's fortunes will change once Monster Hunter 3 is released. Now that won't be happening. This announcement is on the same scale as Rockstar Games suddenly announcing that the Grand Theft Auto series will be Wii exclusive. It is that big.
Considering the PS3 is the only region free console available, Pink Godzilla really wants it to succeed. But with announcements like these, the future is looking bleak for the PS3.
