Sega Announces Details On Two PS3 Titles

Today, Sega of Japan announced that they will be releasing two titles for the PS3 this year. The first title, Sega Golf, will be released as a launch title in Japan. The second title, Sonic the Hedgehog, will be released one month later on December 21st.

The most interesting morsel, however......

.......was the announced prices of 7140 yen (tax included) for each game.

This is excellent news indeed as it is the exact same price that Sega generally sells its PS2 games for in Japan. When Ken Kutaragi announced earlier this year that PS3 games would be in the $50 to $100 range, appropriately so, there was a tsunami of speculation that PS3 games would retail for $40 to $50 more than its competitors. This certainly would have been a tough pill to swallow for owners of an already overpriced system.

Although the fact that Sega is selling its PS3 games for the same price as its PS2 games in Japan provides no guarantees for pricing in America, it is probably safe to assume that PS3 games will retail between $50 to $60. And if this is indeed the case, will this lower than expected price point put pressure on Nintendo to drop the price of its games from the announced $50 retail price to the $40 price point? Time will tell.
