Sony fanboys are an easy bunch to pick out of a crowd of gamers. Any discussion about the PS3's poor, poor sales, and up until now you were sure to hear a voice from the crowd proclaim, "Just wait until Metal Gear Solid 4 comes out." Well it's out. And in Japan at least, it's the best selling PS3 title at launch to date. But that doesn't necessarily mean much, now does it...or does it?
According to Enterbrain, MGS4, if you include the stand alone game, the special edition version and the PS3 premium pack, has sold a whopping 476,334 units in the first four days of its release. During the MGS4 launch week, Sony sold through only 77,208 consoles bringing the grand total to 2,177,825 units sold in Japan. By way of comparison, Nintendo sold just 46,000 Wii's for the same week. This was only the third time that the weekly sales of the PS3 beat the Wii since both consoles launched. The question remains, can Sony keep the momentum going.
What about the Xbox 360 you ask? Well, we don't talk about the Xbox 360's sales figures in Japan.
As an aside, MGS4 has performed about the same in the US with just over 500,000 units sold in the first week. Likewise, the PS3 experienced a spike in sales also outselling the Wii in the US. Maybe MGS4 was just what the doctor ordered to help the PS3 start catching up to the Xbox 360 and the Wii after all. Could the Sony fanboys be right? Only time will tell.
