All you sinners out there better pack an overcoat, some mittens and maybe an extra pair of socks, because all signs point to hell having frozen over. First, the PSP has consistently outsold the NDS in Japan since February '08. Then, thanks primarily to Kojima's MGS4, the PS3 managed to outsell the Wii for a week in Japan. Now, Square Enix has chosen the Xbox 360 as its preferred console for the release of three new RPG's.
Eternal damnation is a long time. Pack wisely!
Although details are scant, the announcement of three new RPG's set for global release is sure to make even the most hardcore Xbox 360 fans pirouette with glee. First to hit retail shelves will be Infinite Undiscovery set for release on September 2, 2008. An original creation by Valkyrie Profile and Star Ocean developer tri-Ace, Infinite Discovery will be an Xbox 360 exclusive!
The Last Remnant, a new RPG series created by the wizards at Square Enix, is expected to be released this winter, meaning Q4 of 2008 or Q1 of 2009. Although, The Last Remnant is tentatively scheduled for a PS3 release, expect the Xbox 360 version to hit first as the PS3 ship date is marked as TBA.
Finally, Star Ocean: The Last Hope, the fourth installment in the series, is slated for release in 2009. Presently, Square Enix has not indicated whether this game will be exclusive to the Xbox 360. By the same token, however, Square Enix has not announced whether a PS3 version is planned.
The excitement of Xbox 360 fans surely comes at the expense of PS3 owners. The fact that none of these three games is exclusive to the PS3 is a bad sign for Sony. Remember, Square Enix's strong support for the Playstation platform is one of the primary factors leading to Sony's console dominance over the last decade. Without Square Enix in their back pocket, can the PS3 emerge from its slump? If Elder Matsu's glossy black PS3 were a Magic Eight Ball, all signs would be pointing to no.
Quick quiz: What is the only console of the current generation for which Square Enix has not released a single title?
Answer: The PS3.
Think about it. Three years ago, if someone had bet you $500 that more than a year after the launch of the PS3, Square Enix will have released more than 13 titles combined for the NDS and Wii but none for the PS3, you would have gladly taken that bet.
Capcom (Monster Hunter 3), Konami (Power Pro and Kojima's next project), Square Enix...how many more defections can the PS3 withstand?
