At The Movies With Pinky And Jumpman: Mario At The Ice Capades.
It's time to cozy up to the monitor once again with your favorite video reviewers, Pinky and Jumpman, as they present another legendary film from gaming's rich history. Today, our intrepid duo will take on one of the most famous video game clips ever: Super Mario at the Ice Capades!
Will our heroes make it through this no-doubt traumatic experience? Will the Koopa Troopas ever stop dancing? What is Luigi doing with a gun? Join us below the fold to find out the answers to these and many more questions.
The Ice Capades was one of America's favorite institutions for many years. Starting way back in the 1940's, these ice shows featured popular national icons like over-the-hill Olympic skaters and minor TV stars. Every TV show, movie, or kids character of note had it's own Ice Capades show.
Of course, with the immense popularity of the Super Mario Bros., it was only a matter of time before Nintendo's flagship franchise got the Ice Capades treatment. In 1989, the Mario Bros. starred in their own ice show spectacular. Along with familiar faces Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach, and Bowser, the show also starred 80's teen heartthrobs Alyssa Milano and Jason Bateman.
The show began with Bateman introducing Milano to the wonderful world of Nintendo....
Ohmygawd! It's TV's Jason Bateman! I loved him in Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium and that one episode of Matlock!
And don't forget the lovely Alyssa Milano. She was in that awful Double Dragon movie.
Oh look, they're playing some wholesome Nintendo before the show. She must be doing some research for her part in Double Dragon. Hey Alyssa, don't let the Bolo trap you on the conveyor belt!
They're not playing Double Dragon, they're playing Super Mario Bros. All the kids love those wacky plumbers. I certainly hope they don't catch some sort of crazy computer virus that turns their Nintendo into a portal to some strange parallel ice world where Nintendo characters are played by badly dressed human actors.
Uh-oh, what's going on? They must have caught the virus! That's what happens when you don't blow on the cartridge.
Oh wow, those are some interesting pants Mr. Koopa. They look like holdover props from the Koopa Kartoons show. I didn't realize that the Bowser had such a lovely singing voice, though.
Be nice Pinky, that's TV's Christopher Hewett. He was in a bunch of those after school specials. He taught me that Winners Don't Use Drugs!
I don't know about Koopa's army. Those Goombas look like they're remote controlled, and the Troopas seem more interested in dancing than fighing.
Wow, Peach was really rockin' that Brooklyn accent back in the day. And where did she get that army of children?
She's using them as human shields! That monster!
Oh good, the Mario Bros are here! Maybe they'll bring some dignity to this mess.
I wouldn't count on it. Wait a minute, is that a gun? Why does Luigi have a gun? Miyamoto must be rolling in his grave right about now.
Oh no! Why did you do that, Luigi? Those poor Troopas, all they wanted to do was dance!
Luigi is just slaughtering those guys. How is this supposed to be appropriate for kids? And when did the Marios start packing heat?
Jumpman, please don't tell Luigi about all those times I made fun of Luigi's Mansion. I don't want him to come after me with that sparkler gun!
That's just great. The great King Koopa is beaten by a bunch of kids with plastic wrenches. And why did Peach give Mario a Purple Plunger of Freedom anyway? He just stood around and let Luigi do all the work! This whole thing didn't make any sense.
Calm down Jumpman, it's not supposed to make any sense. That's what happened on 80's TV specials. Don't worry, it's all over now. See, the computer virus is gone and Jason Bateman and Alyssa Milano can go back to playing their NES.
Phew, I'm glad that's over. C'mon, let's go play some Smash Bros and forget that we ever saw that nonsense. I call Luigi!
No, not Luigi! Anyone but Luigi! AHHHHHHHHHH......
