PG Game Update with Corey Lewis

The PG Game is taking shape! The story, gameplay and art style are in a flexibly firm outline and are nearing a solid state soon. After the latest meeting it was clear that game is at the point where key information can now be revealed! Hit the jump and let Corey Lewis enlighten you!

Way back in August Pink Godzilla announced that the winner of the PAX 2007 Dev Kit Tournament would win the opportunity to design their own videogame in Flash. The winner would come up with the idea, and Pink Godzilla would make it happen. Well, PAX came and went, PG had a blast and had some legendary moments, and a Dev Kit World Champion was crowned. So sit back, relax and reminisce as Rick tells of his first experience working with Pink Godzilla.

The first PG Game development meeting was very productive and a lot of the big design parts were brought up that would shape the way the game would be conceptualized after that first meeting. One of the most important issues resolved at that first meeting was that Corey Lewis would step up and offer his artistic talents to the PG Game. Although it is hard to make out in the high quality youtube video, Corey started even in the first meeting to sketch out some early ideas for the games art style. Corey’s art style was even incorporated into the gameplay and as more details come out this had a large part to do with the way the game’s story would be told.

The first meeting also brought Corey Lewis’s Grapes into the Pink Godzilla world, shaping the story and adding key gameplay ideas. The gelatinous goo from the Grape world caused major changes in the PG world and changed the story into a new direction, including having the game intertwined with a comic; bring the two story telling mediums together. The collaborative efforts of having two mediums tell the story will hopefully bring a new twist to the way that the story is realized.

As gameplay designs were talked about and the realization that the game was going in a different direction, the PG game development team reached a final verdict on everyone’s favorite game in development, Cockfighter. The team was somewhat divided over the details, but Elder Goban was always a strong advocate, but not even he could stop the demise of Cockfighter. The game still would take new shape and after the fact, Cockfighter may be gone, but not forgotten.

After the loss of Cockfighter, Rick sheds new light on the game development process by reminding everyone that the game to come will no doubt be great. The game continues to become more refined and new details are added and some are scraped. The game starts to take shape as level design is thought about in detail and how it would affect the gameplay.

The PG game development team spent many hours debating the best way to make the PG game stand out in the flashy world of video games. What makes a game fun and innovative? Does the medium (console, PC, arcade, use of custom peripherals) affect the way the game is perceived as new and exciting? Does the fact that Super Mario Galaxy was published on the Wii make it more revolutionary than Little Big Planet because it will be on the PS3? The answers to these questions were thought about and decidedly moot because flash games are only on the PC! The teams’ consensus was that making a high quality platformer would make the game stand out by simply being fun and exciting to play.

After the then recent launch of Super Mario Galaxy, the PG Game development team discussed what upgrades could Mario get in Super Mario Galaxy to make the game take a turn for the worst? Elder Kozo remarked that Spring Mario was difficult to control and Elder Taragan was quick to squash that claim as quickly as he could. The discussion brought about the fact that every gamer has different ideas about how certain gameplay elements should work and you can’t please everyone.

The latest game development meeting brought about the final details to be discussed and the outline of the game was fairly complete at the end. The all important name was finalized and is ready for the masses! Corey Lewis took a few minutes after the meeting to break down the progress the game has made and recap where the game stands now. Hit the play button to hear what the game may actually be like.

That's it! NxG will hopefully be a great game to play and the comic/game hybrid will no doubt be an interesting combo. Stay tuned for the latest news on NxG including more footage from the latest meeting as the more details are announced. The PG game development team is still hard at work on some of the details, so stay alert for more info as it becomes available.
