« The First Ever Video Games | Main | Year In Review In Haiku - 2008 »
The Elders know that even the most hardcore PG fans can't make it to the blog everyday to catch up on all the articles published during any week or even month. With the tons of pictures and videos published after any event, it’s sometimes hard for even the Elders to look at them all.
We've got you covered with the best PG Blog articles of the past year. PG attended many exciting new events in 2008, like Wondercon, the Northwest Pinball and Gameroom Show, Jet City Retro, as well as old favorites like Sakuracon and PAX. 2008 also brought the exciting discovery of the elusive Star Bear (and his sidekick, aptly named Sidekick) who were both captured near the end of the year. Hit the jump for a look at the best articles penned from January to mid August 2008 here on the PG Blog!
Seattle Reigns Supreme
In the debate over which city has the most gamers, one need look no further than Seattle. With the greater Seattle area home to Microsoft and Nintendo as well as countless developers, the area can't be beat. Seattle is the #1 Gaming City as evidenced by the local paper’s sport section.
Pink Godzilla Dev Kit
The PG Dev Kit had a good year. The very first Professional Dev Kit League was formed, with aspiring developers honing their skills in monthly contests. If that wasn't great enough, PG announced that an Xbox Live Arcade version of the Dev Kit was in development, making the difficulty of finding Dev Kit players obsolete in the future.
PG Blog Exclusives
With so many blogs to read online, not everyone can get to the PG Blog everyday. With fun for the whole family, PG’s got you covered with cool art projects like papercraft, classic TV reviews, and even some Michael Jackson and Sega thrown in for good measure. Let's not forget that Elders go out of their way to make sure that everyone gets more time with that legendary figure known only as Cheatum, who is always willing to give his fair and balanced opinion, and is even willing to eat some chicken for the cause. Aside from providing great articles on the history of video games, PG is always looking to the future for that next big idea.
Pink Godzilla Earns an Official Title
Little did anyone know that PG is part of a nutricious geek diet! That's right, PG got its first title, Geek Staple.
Ping Pong II: The Hero Within
Elder Matsu returns for a second try in the Ping Pong battle to end all Ping Pong battles, its legend.....wait for it.....dary!
Uncle J Returns!
Mario and Peach, The Real Story
The "finest" work of Elder Goban returned with part 3, and part 3 1/2 in the first half of 2008. Everybody loves the Mario and Peach: The Real Story series!
Elder Goban Responds
With all the comments on Mario and Peach, The Real Story, Elder Goban sat down not once, but twice to talk about the comments on his greatest work of prose.
The Super Mario Galaxy Scandal
The scandal continued with much more on the growing Super Mario Galaxy Scandal, as new information was found by PG's own Elder Taragan. With new enemies and new allies, make sure you stay up to date on the growing controversy!
SSBB
Many big games came out this year, with arguably the biggest being Super Smash Bros Brawl. When Famitsu gave SSBB a perfect score, The Elders promptly got a Japanese copy and found out the quickest way to unlock all the characters. PG even held a preview event so that local gamers could get a chance to play and see the game in action before it came out in North America. Because everyone knows that PG is Seattle's Smash news source.
Star Bear
SSBB's most infamous contribution to the world, the bizarre Star Bear, was uncovered in February. The Elders swore they would catch the foul beast before the years end. Take a look at the frightening first sighting of Star Bear and the subsequent video footage from his eventual capture by the Elders later in 2008. PG's Investigators also uncovered rare footage of Star Bear and his quest for the Star Wand.
The Original SEXBOX from Japan
Long before FOX news got in on the action, Japan had its own SEXBOX scandal that was a little different. Did anyone ever figure out what a roter is?
SEXbox Scandal
The infamous SEXbox scandal that showed gamers that the "mainstream" media has no real idea about the games they choose to cover. With a conservative blogger starting the madness, PG was right there in the mix, trying to get the real story. From blatant lies to inventing games out of thin air (PG is still looking for that copy of "Barbie's Horse Adventure”) FOX news reached a new level of "Fair and Balanced" reporting. Eventually, author Cooper Lawrence finally realized her mistake, while Amazon performed a magic trick, and and EA even tried to fight back, kind of. PG even got a chance to interview its own SEXbox addict!
Wondercon 2008
The PG crew took the long journey down to San Francisco for Wondercon 2008 and introduced Da Boof Jr to California gamers. From catching rare footage of a Pac attack, to hanging around GDC when Wondercon was closed, the event was a lot of fun.
Sakuracon 2008
Sakuracon was fun as always with Da Boof Sr making an appearance. With Optimus Prime patrolling the grounds, the event was safe for everyone to enjoy (even a sighting of the Joe Zone wasn't enough to ruin our fun!). With Penny Arcade's delicious waffles to eat, and lots of Dev Kit to play, Da Boof was a great place to hang out and see the cosplayers out in full force.
Northwest Pinball and Gameroom Show
The first annual Northwest Pinball and Gameroom Show was a blast and the Elders had a great time playing games, even unsuccessfully bidding on a few machines. The King of Kong's Steve Wiebe also made an appearance, and broke down some of his Donkey Kong strategy for gamers to take a look at.
Comicon '08
Elders Taragan and Matsu took the long journey down to Comic Con in San Diego to see what our friends in the non-electronic geek world are up to.
East Coast PAX?
When PG put up a rumor alert about where we might be in 2010, it didn't take long for the news to become official.
Stay tuned for part two coming soon, only here on the PG Blog!
