The Ouendan, or cheer squad, is a common sight in Japan, where squads of enthusiastic cheermasters fuel the burning vigor of those in need (probably by using magic, who knows). These cheer magicians were more recently given the limelight in game form in the crazy popular "Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan!" for the Nintendo DS, much to the delight of rhythm gamers and cheer aficianados alike.
But what we have here is a strange case of life imitating art imitating life, in a vicious cycle that threatens to delight us all. Read on for a glimpse of the cheer-tastic future.
These cheerleaders seem to be taking their cue from the Ouendan game for the NDS, helping everyday folks get through their everyday lives with their rousing screams. But what if you aren't in Japan, you say? What if you are here in the good old US of A, and need a little help playing dodgeball or defeating a giant mouse who is harassing your daughter? Behold, the first of what I hope are many stateside cheermongers, spotted at last week's Penny Arcade Expo.

OUENDA~N!!! ...is probably what that guy next to him is saying. Cheer on, noble cosplayer. Cheer on. I'm sure he was there whenever someone at the show needed that extra push to win the Mario Kart tournament, or to work the crowd into a big enough frenzy to repel a giant meteor threatening all life on Earth using only the power of their collective will. Is this a new trend? Will we soon have groups of mystery men breaking down the walls when we're having trouble opening that jar of salsa? Are we entering a new Golden Age?
Anyway, if you want to see what all of the fuss is about, check out our review of Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan! Or, you could just buy it outright, content in the knowledge that the game is most likely the greatest thing ever. Or you could get a suit like that guy and cheer on those in need. OR! You could wait for the American release of Elite Beat Agents - bear in mind that while the gameplay is the same, the cheerleaders in the US version of the game are not cheerleaders at all, but members of an underground cabal bent on cheering on dogs on skateboards. Which should be a huge disclaimer all over the box.

Interesting note: Arther purchased a copy of the game at the Pink Godzilla booth at PAX because he did not yet own it...
