Pink Godzilla has accurately predicted the future...again. We'll have to give our resident Nostrapinkus another Scooby Snack for nailing this one. Just as Pink Godzilla speculated back in May of 2007, Nintendo has announced today that Smash Bros. Brawl will feature everyone's favorite space explorer Captain Olimar of Pikmin fame.
Will Captain Olimar's signature move be the fart or the belch? Will Olimar be able to summon a bulborb? Will Louie or the President be playable alternates? We'll know soon enough as Smash Bros. Brawl is set to launch in Japan in just a few short weeks.
One of our three predictions has turned out to be true. Mega Man remains a strong possibility to materialize. The dark horse of the triad, of course, is Super Joe. But with Bionic Commando set to make a return on next gen systems, Super Joe may not be as far fetched as he once seemed.
Here was Pink Godzilla's May of 2007 analysis as to why we should expect Captain Olimar to be a playable character in Smash Bros. Brawl.
OLIMAR
Featured Games: Pikmin and Pikmin 2
Publisher: Nintendo
For those who don't know, Olimar is the protagonist in the Pikmin series on the Gamecube. In Pikmin, Olimar summons hoards of Pikmin to take down beasties and carry items. Olimar already packs a powerful punch-kick combo. Top that with his noxious farting and burping ability and you've got a prize fighter in the making. Imagine Olimar tossing virulent Pikmin on an unsuspecting foe to temporarily freeze him before finishing him off with a rock bomb or an antenna zap.
This proposal cannot be so far-fetched as Olimar is a Miyamoto creation who really hasn't seen the love that Mario, Donkey Kong and Link have received. Olimar simply needs more exposure. While Olimar did receive a cameo appearance in SSB Melee, look for Miyamoto to lobby Sakurai to include the bulbous space-man in SSBB as a fully playable fighter. The inclusion of a relatively obscure character in the Smash Bros. series certainly wouldn't be unprecedented. After all, SSB introduced Ness into the underground world of Smash Fighting, and then SSB Melee surprised everyone with the inclusion of Mr. Game & Watch.
Another possibility would be an Olimar and Louie combo fighter, similar to the Ice Climbers in SSB Melee. Just imagine all of the Pikmin possibilities.
