"He thinks he is a girl and he spits eggs from his mouth. He’d rather be called Birdetta." Never have more mysterious words been printed in a Nintendo instruction manual. He would rather be a she? But why? Certainly, there is more to the story than the measly two sentences Nintendo chose to share. So Pink Godzilla sent its crack team of investigative reporters (Matsu, Taragan and Goban) to the door on top of the stairs in the small cave by the picnic area of the nearby mountain in the Mushroom Kingdom to investigate.
During his stay at an inn within the castle gates, Elder Goban happened across a green dinosaur-like creature who could speak but one word, "Yoshi." Although the creature’s vocabulary was lacking key elements such as verbs, adjectives and gerunds, Elder Goban experienced little difficulty comprehending the simple dialect. And what a story the little green guy, who Elder Goban aptly refers to as Yoshi, had to tell.
Yoshi spoke of his childhood and reminisced of the day he met Birdo. According to Yoshi, Birdo was constantly teased and harassed by the other yoshis for being, well, different. You see, yoshis of all genders can be easily identified by their unique ability to pop a squat and lay an egg at will. Birdo, however, spat eggs from his mouth.
As Yoshi tells it, Birdo was a good kid who struggled with his inner demons. It wasn’t so much the teasing about his cannon snout that bothered Birdo, but the unignorable feeling that he was born in the wrong skin. Why was he a Birdo and not a Birdetta?
Elder Matsu reporting. According to Clawgrip, Birdo’s favorite stone is crystal. Mouser says that he frequently heard sounds of Abba and the Village People streaming from Birdo’s lair. Mario recalls once dreaming about Birdo. Back to you, Elder Goban.
A tear forming in his eye, Yoshi says that one day Birdo just disappeared from Yoshi Island, never to be seen by Yoshi again until the pair teamed together to form a formidable duo in Mario Tennis. Yoshi then cracked a smile and complemented Birdo on how beautiful (and happy) she had become.
Taragan reporting. Intense retro gaming investigations have revealed that contrary to popular belief, Birdo might not actually be the first transgender videogame character. In Pac-Man the orange ghost was named Clyde. In Ms. Pac-Man, however, without explanation Clyde became Sue. Could Clyde actually be the first transgender videogame character? Namco refused to comment.
