« Guitar Hero II New Year's Eve Party @ Wann | Main | DS Shigureden: Liquid Arashiyama Spider Monkey in a Can »
The Japanese gaming press loves to discuss sales figures for current generation hardware and software. In fact, each week Famitsu, the #1 gaming publication in Japan, prints the sales figures of the hottest selling games. Pink Godzilla has decided to carry on this tradition in Beikoku - the great rice country. So instead of creating a list of awards for the best games of '06 (standard fare these days for most sites), Pink Godzilla is bringing to you a list of the best selling games of '06.
Pink Godzilla (Seattle) is pleased to announce THE BEST SELLING IMPORT AND RETRO GAMES OF 2006:
Why it sells:
![]()
Because it's pure rhythm-action insanity. What is there not to love about a game where you take on the role of Japanese male cheerleaders encouraging people to succeed at mundane tasks in their daily lives. Osu! The addictive game play, awesome graphic presentation and the excellent renditions of random J-pop tunes makes Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan a Pink Godzilla favorite. This is an absolute must have title for all DS owners. And if you don’t have a NDS system, this game alone is reason enough to buy a NDS. Just don’t forget to put on those screen protectors.
Yes, there is multi-cart multiplayer for up to four players. And believe it or not, the multi-player is even more fun than the single player mode.
Runner-up: Bleach DS: Souten Ni Kakeru
Best Selling US Title: New Super Mario Bros.
Why it sells:

Because it's Initial D! For those not in the know, Initial D is all about the world of illegal Japanese street racing and drifting is the style of choice. Initial D: Street Stage is based off Version 3 of the arcade game and contains some added content not contained in the PS2 version. In addition to wireless ad-hoc play, the game includes a new card element. Following each battle, the player earns a cards, which can be used to unlock new features or customize your cars. In all, Street Stage features 185 cards to collect, and cards can also be traded to other players wirelessly. If this game doesn't make you want to enter the dangerous and sexy world of tofu delivery, nothing will.
Runner-up: Naruto: Narutimett Portable and DJ Max Portable (tied)
Best Selling US Title: Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth
Why it sells:
Because that pinkin' rhythm just get's you. Rhythm Tengoku is the insane lovechild of Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan for the DS and Warioware for the GBA. It’s got the addictive music of Ouendan combined with the addictive ADD game play of Warioware. For example, on the first level, you take control of a fugly karate master. Your objective is to punch random objects such as flowerpots and light bulbs to the rhythm of the music. And for a GBA game, the music is an excellent mix of techno, latin rhythms, J-pop, etc., complete with vocals.
Rhythm Tengoku is a must have game for fans of the action-rhythm genre. No collection is complete without it.
Runner-up: Dotstream
Best Selling US Title: Final Fantasy V
Why it sells:
Because it's Final Fantasy and with 5 years and $35 million spent in development, the game is pinkin' awesome. The story of Final Fantasy XII is set in Ivalice in an age where magic was common and large airships crowded out the heavens. FF XII features six playable characters and the lovable Chocobos. The leveling up of characters is accomplished through a new licensing system, which is similar to FF X's Sphere Grid, but with a lot more freedom.
Final Fantasy XII became only the sixth game ever to receive a perfect 40/40 score from Famitsu. The game was also praised inside Japan and out for its beautiful graphics, interesting story, intuitive game system, and the freshness it brought to the old Final Fantasy series. FF XII is truly deserving of its multiple 2006 Game of the Year awards it received.
Runner-up: Naruto: Narutimett Hero 3
Best Selling US Title: Final Fantasy XII
Why it sells:
Because it's one of the best fighting games on the GameCube this side of Smash Bros. Naruto 4 features all the characters you'd expect complete with the real voice actors from the anime. The action is particularly frenetic in the three on three tag battles or the four-player team battles. The graphic style is cell-shaded and the overall presentation is excellent. The best part of the game is that if you can hone your skills, you can make bank through the Pink Godzilla tournament series where Naruto 4 is one of the featured games. If you love fighting games on the Cube and you're sick of playing Smash Bros. and Soul Calibur, then Naruto 4 is the game for you. FYI, don't bother waiting for the US release because it ain't coming.
