Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan

ouendan.jpgThe addictive game play, awesome graphic presentation and the excellent renditions of random J-pop tunes makes Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan a Pink Godzilla favorite. This is an absolute must have title for all DS owners. And if you don’t have a DS system, this game alone is reason enough to buy a DS, or better yet a DS Lite.

Read on for Pinky G and Jumpman's take on Ouendan for the Nintendo DS:

.

“Osu” – a greeting usually used by males. “Tatakae” – to fight against. “Ouendan” – a cheering party.
What are you doing?
I’m using my Kanji dictionary for my DS Lite to find out what Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan means in English.
What are you doin’ lookin’ up words in Japanese when you can barely even speak your native language of…of…what’s your native language anyway?
It’s Pink or as they say in Japanese Pinku-go.
…Pinku-go? Okay then say something for me in Pinku-go.
No.
What do you mean no? Just say somethin’! Anything!
Fine be a little BEEYA---
Pink pink, piNk Pink PINK!
What does that mean?
Shut up before I smack you with my flipper.
But you just said the word “pink” five times. Don’t tell me that “pink” is the only word in Pinku-go. How can one word be used to mean so many different things?
Intonation.
So what does “Pink PINK piNK PInk PiNk” mean in Pinku-go.
pinK U!!!!!!! You know I’m an orphan; how dare you say such things about my family!
??????? Sorry I brought it up. So what does Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan mean in English?
According to the Kanji dictionary Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan means. “A greeting used by males…to fight against…a cheering party.”
What the pinK does that mean?
Who cares ‘cuz this game rocks. In Ouendan you play as a group of male cheerleaders who run around the city cheering people on to overcome obstacles in their daily lives.
Sounds deep.
Well the concept is simple, but the game play is anything but. Once the J-pop kicks in, red, green, orange and blue dots appear all over the bottom screen. Touch the dots with the stylus in the correct sequence and to the rhythm of the music to progress. Don’t miss a beat or you’ll end up on your arse. Miss too many beats, and the game will end.
Let me try. I think I’ll go with a little “Ready, Steady, Go.”
Each song starts off with a little back story, presented in comic book form, which inevitably ends with someone screaming, “Ouendan!,” calling upon you to bail them out of trouble with your manly cheers.
Oh yeah! In this “Ready, Steady Go” stage, it looks like I have to save the world from a giant meteor. This is where Jumpman springs into action to save the day! Orange…green…blue…red…and back to orange.
Jumpman, you’re a beast with that stylus. Your 197 hit combo has set your bottom screen a blazin’.
With the power of this Hori stylus in my hands, I can save the world from certain destruction.
Oh no! Pink-Pink-Pink!
In English please!
Spin-Spin-Spin! Oops, too late.
Noooooooooo! Armageddon just because I couldn’t spin the stylus fast enough. Let me try again; I know I can save the world this time.
Okay hot shot, but why don’t you try a higher difficulty setting. The game play gets really crazy on the “extreme” level with the lady cheerleaders.
Ladies? I gotta get me some of that action.
I’ll tell you what. You score an “S” on “Ready, Steady, Go” on the extreme difficulty setting, and I’ll teach you all the swear words in Pinku-go.
Game on.

The addictive game play, awesome graphic presentation and the excellent renditions of random J-pop tunes makes Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan a Pink Godzilla favorite. This is an absolute must have title for all DS owners. And if you don’t have a DS system, this game alone is reason enough to buy a DS, or better yet a DS Lite. Just don’t forget to put on those screen protectors.

For the ultimate Ouendan experience, pick up a Y-cable and Comfortable Touch Pen DS from Hori. The Y-cable is to hook your DS up to your surround sound system for some auditory overload. The Comfortable Touch Pen DS is a full length stylus that snaps into place on the back of your DS, and is required gear for achieving an “S” on every stage and/or spinning your opponent into oblivion in the multi-player matches.

Yes, there is multi-cart multiplayer for up to four players. And believe it or not, the multi-player is even more fun than the single player mode.

Game on, baby!

Some insane people set up a highscores list for the game. I think its worth noting.

http://www.ouendan.be/

So far, I'm #9 for Meteor on insane :) That was on a run where all but 11 hits were perfect, and those 11 hits were green 100's, I think the top scores are no more than 1 or 2 greens, or possibly 100% 300 hits. Its good to know there are a few people out there more obessed than I.

Now to beat them all...

Cool Ouendan write-up! Penny Arcade mentioned they ran into you guys at E3 in their Elite Beat Agents post! I think Elite Beat Agents will be alot of fun but I doubt the songs will match Ouendan's...
There will only be one Ouendan. Unless they made a part 2. Come on Nintendo!

I've bought three copies from you now. One for myself, one for my wife, and one for my friend to give to his son. And I might be buying a fourth for my brother soon.

Did I mention what terrible people you are for plugging it into the store sound system when you showed it to me at the store?

Pink Godzilla: Yes, it's a bit devious...

I love Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan! cause the gameplay is fun, the music is awesome and the storyline is over-dramatic, chessy goodness.

I played it off a friend, and got horribly addicted, to the point I ended up buying a ds just for this game; and now that I'm done with the japanese version I want the english one, Elites Beat Asians, as I like to call it, but I doubt the music with be as good.
