PG Invades NWCGE 2007!

A few weeks ago, The Northwest Classic Gaming Expo was held in Portland. Pink Godzilla dispatched an elite team of Elders to investigate this event.

How did our team of heroes fare? What kind of cool swag did they come home with? Read on for the recently declassified convention report.

September 28th 2007
Seattle, Washington

5:02pm: As our story starts our two travelers meet at PG Headquarters in Seattle and take the short walk to King Street Station to catch the Seattle to Portland Commuter train bound for NWCGE 07. Elder Goban appears in need of refreshment so a last minute stop for coffee is made and the hope of pastries keeps Elder Kozo happy.

5:22pm: Elder Goban’s thirst now quenched, the duo heads to the ticket kiosk for boarding passes and some last minute discussion of the travel arrangements.

5:31pm: Elder Kozo remarks that some Dev Kit would make a nice addition to the trip down; wagers are made, Joe Zone threats are traded, and the deck is prepared.

5:45pm: Upon entering the loading dock, the duo boards the train car and picks two seats at the front of the car with rear facing seats directly in front of them, the optimum playing surface for a few games of Dev Kit.

5:55pm: The train departs and the duo anxiously discuss what gaming goodness awaits them in Portland; a Vectrex? Keio's Flying Squadron? Perhaps even a Dreamcast or two?

6:23pm: Now clearly outside of Seattle, the Dev Kit match is started. Elder Goban draws first blood and Elder Kozo immediately issues a rematch.

7:22pm: As the second game falls into Elder Goban’s favor, Elder Kozo thinks that he may still be cursed from his showing at the PAX tourney where an ‘amateur’ player humiliated him, only discovered to be a plant by Elder Taragan.

7:41pm: After a quick and ridiculously one sided third game, Elder Kozo fears that Elder Goban may have studied Cheatum’s playing style after his second place finish at PAX and be unstoppable for the time being.

8:22pm: After an uneventful fourth game where the better Elder did not win, Elder Kozo decides a restroom break and a cold beverage may be the solution to his troubles.

8:32pm: After a refreshing IPA, Elder Kozo decides this body now recharged and he may summon the inner strength to defeat Elder Goban.

9:21pm: Relief is had by all aboard as Elder Goban falls to Elder Kozo by a score of 60 to 135, redeeming his poor showing earlier in the night.

9:31pm: As the train pulls in to Portland the duo collect their gear and hail a taxi for a short drive to the hotel where in just a few hours their gaming dreams could come true.

10:40pm: After a weird hotel bar is discovered it is decided that a trip out of the hotel may be needed and calls are made.

Portland, Oregon

1:30am: Elder Goban and Kozo retire after an uneventful night out.

7:35am: The pair awakes and prepare for an exciting day of exploring the booths at the event.

8:27am: After a quick breakfast buffet in the hotel, the pair walks to the adjacent conference center to wait for the event to open.

8:29am: Right before the doors open, the Elders take a look the other conference sharing the building with them...

Passion Party to the Right! Video Games to the Left! The Perfect Pair!

9:02am: The doors open! Elder Goban and Kozo madly race to opposite corners and make some great finds; a Vectrex, a Sega Master System, an Apple II and many more.

9:12: Their arms now full, the pair hurries back to the hotel to make the first of many drop offs.

9:20am: The pair returns and continues their exploration of more booths. Great finds are made and hot deals are struck.

9:41am: The duo again must take the short but arduous walk back to the hotel with arms full of great gaming goodness and hurry back for more.

9:57am: Our heroes once again fill their bags with goodies and then retire to take some quick pictures of their finds:

The haul after 3 trips!

The side view looks good too!

Is that TRON on laserdisc?

Suikoden II with the guide and Shining Force III!

10:42am: After evaluating all the remaining items for sale, some other deals are struck and the pair greets the arriving Elder Matsu and Taragan just in from PG Headquarters.

12:22pm: As the Elders continue shopping, many deals are in the works.

2:20pm: After deals are sealed the task of loading the car is undertaken by the Elders and it is proven to be more difficult than expected.

3:01pm:
The car now loaded, the Elders take time to play some of the Arcade and console games set up in a back corner to relax before the trip home. Heated matches of Golden Eye on the N64 rage on for hours. In the main event of the evening, Elder Matsu narrowly defeats forum member Athens at Golden Eye.

4:10pm: The Elders prepare to ship out, but not before a quick trip to the mythical Ground Kontrol Classic Arcade where heated games will no doubt take place.

7:47pm: After a trip to a superb hamburger joint around the corner, the Elders decide they have been playing arcade games for a few hours and decide to ship out.

11:22pm: After arriving back at PG Headquarters in Seattle, the car is unloaded and the loot is examined, the day is declared more than a success.

11:54pm: The Elders retire to the warm confines of PG Headquarters and partake in some gaming before retiring for the night, satisfied with the days finds.
