Dev Kit Tournament Results

Everyone's makin's videogames. And now, thanks to the PG Dev Kit Tourney at PAX, so is Rick the PAX Enforcer. That is because he was able to beat the field of Miyamoto hopefuls and emerge as the Dev Kit world champion. So what exactly did Rick win? Well in addition to 150 PAX points and a $200 gift certificate to use at Pink Godzilla, Rick won the opportunity to design his own videogame to be produced by Pink Godzilla. In addition to receiving the title of game designer, Rick's game will also be turned into a title card in the first Dev Kit expansion. Wow!

Thanks to everyone who participated. Good times for all. If you missed the Dev Kit tourney this year, don't worry. We'll have officially sanctioned Dev Kit tourneys throughout the year and there's always PAX 2008.

Rick L, a PAX Enforcer, is the new Dev Kit World Champion. After winning the finals, he was interviewed by both gearlive.com tv and Pink Godzilla.

FINALS

So the finals was supposed to be two winners plus a wild card, but tourney rules say that in case of a tie for the last wild card spot, all tying players advance. So the final table was 4 players, with Cale H and Rick L tying at 83 points for the wild card. Cheatum was the only undefeated player, and the favorite. Rick had only won one game so far, squeaking in with a wild card 3 times out of 4. To win the tourney, a player had to win twice at the finals table.

GAME ONE:

Rick L 86 (2-3)
Cale H 73 (2-3)
James H 57 (3-2)
Cheatum 51 (4-1)

Rick wins the all-important first game. And Cheatum takes his first loss, coming in last.

GAME TWO:

Rick L 108 (3-3)
Cheatum 72 (4-2)
James H 64 (3-3)
Cale H 28 (2-4)

And in a stunning turn of events, Rick L sweeps the finals table. Rick as the only player coming into day 2 who had not won a single game; but apparently he was saving the best for last. Rick's weapon of choice was Kya, the Neutral Guardian.

FINAL STANDINGS: 54 entered, but as you surely know, there can be only one.

1. Rick L - 2007 PINK GODZILLA DEV KIT WORLD CHAMPION.

2. Cheatum 122 points
3. James H 121 points
4. Cale H 101 points

PRIZES:

1st: Rick won the right to design his own video game, using characters from the Pink Godzilla universe. The video game title will appear in the first PG Dev Kit expansion. Rick also won $200 in Pink Godzilla store credit and 150 Penny Arcade tickets (to trade in for about $150 in cool stuff at the Penny Arcade redemption table).

2nd: Cheatum won a Pink Godzilla t-shirt and other nifty PG logo stuff, plus 100 Penny Arcade tickets.

3rd: James H won a Pinky G t-shirt and 75 Penny Arcade tickets.

4th: Cale H won 25 Penny Arcade tickets.

2nd: Eric S 139
3rd: Rick L 152
4th: Cheatum 101
5th: Rick L 108

Biggest win each round of the tourney:

1st: Wally T +116
2nd: Lucas J + 40
3rd: Cale H + 89
4th: Cheatum + 18
5th: Rick L + 36

SO WHAT DO ALL THESE STATS MEAN:

What stands out is that although Rick L didn’t win most of his games, and only had one spectacular game, he played remarkably consistently, never had a bad game.

Cheatum, who came in 2nd, had only one bad game, a 51, and had a high average margin of victory (+10).

The greatest variation: Cale H, whose game by game totals are 153-100-145-83-73-28. Even with that amazingly low last game, he’s still the only day 2 player who averaged both 100 points and a positive margin.

Not surprisingly, the quality of play tends to improve the deeper you get into the tournament, and thus the average margins are small. Scores also went down later in the tourney as players tried to complete their fourth games lightning fast to deny other players the chance to build huge games.
